Black cumin
Black cumin (Nigella sativa) is one of the oldest known cultivated plants and is now mainly grown in the Middle East and Egypt. The small black seeds are rich in oil and are characterised by a high content of unsaturated fatty acids.

The seeds contain valuable phytochemicals and essential oils, which give them their characteristic, slightly pungent and spicy flavour. As well as being used as a food ingredient, black cumin is also processed to produce oil or extracts.
Black cumin is widely used in the food industry: it is added to baked goods, used in delicatessen products and as a seasoning for vegetable and meat dishes. It also serves as a visually appealing ingredient in toppings. In addition to the food sector, black cumin is also used in animal feed.
